This table sums up, for the main stones, their colour, the use tradition assigns them, and their hardness on the Mohs scale — a practical reference for choosing and knowing whether a stone suits daily wear. The uses are traditional and replace no medical advice.
| Stone | Colour | Use (tradition) | Hardness (Mohs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amethyst | Purple | Calm | 7 |
| Rose quartz | Pink | Gentleness, self-love | 7 |
| Citrine | Yellow | Joy, confidence | 7 |
| Tiger's eye | Golden brown | Protection, confidence | 7 |
| Carnelian | Orange-red | Vitality, creativity | 7 |
| Red jasper | Brick red | Grounding, energy | 7 |
| Aventurine | Green | Luck, calm | 7 |
| Garnet | Deep red | Passion, vitality | 6.5-7.5 |
| Black tourmaline | Black | Protection, grounding | 7-7.5 |
| Aquamarine | Light blue | Serenity | 7.5-8 |
| Amazonite | Water green | Calm, communication | 6-6.5 |
| Labradorite | Iridescent grey | Energy protection | 6-6.5 |
| Moonstone | Bluish white | Femininity, intuition | 6-6.5 |
| Lapis lazuli | Ultramarine | Wisdom, truth | 5-5.5 |
| Obsidian | Glassy black | Protection (brittle) | 5-5.5 |
| Turquoise | Blue-green | Protection (porous) | 5-6 |
| Malachite | Banded green | Transformation (fragile, copper) | 3.5-4 |
| Howlite | Veined white | Calm, sleep (soft) | 3.5 |
The hardness column is decisive for use: above 6.5-7, the stone suits a daily bracelet; below (turquoise, lapis, malachite, howlite), keep it for protected wear (pendant, earrings). The use is the traditional one — see each page and our meaning of crystals guide.
By tradition: amethyst for calm, rose quartz for gentleness, citrine for confidence, tiger's eye and black tourmaline for protection, carnelian and garnet for energy. The table above sums up colour, use and hardness for each stone.
Aim for 6.5 to 7 minimum on the Mohs scale (quartz, agate, tiger's eye, aventurine). Below that, like turquoise, malachite or howlite, the stone wears quickly: keep it for occasional, protected wear.
The hardness figures are reliable mineralogical data. The "uses", however, are wellbeing traditions, not scientifically demonstrated, and replace no medical advice.
