# How to clean tarnished gold: 3 safe methods

## Why your gold looks tarnished

Pure gold is inalterable. But a gold piece is an **alloy** (copper, silver…): the lower the carat (9 ct), the higher the share of other metals, and the more it can oxidise or react with skin and cosmetics. The "black" also comes from greasy deposits that trap dust.

## Method 1 — lukewarm soapy water

The fix in 90% of cases: lukewarm water + a drop of **mild soap**, soak 10-15 minutes, brush gently with a **soft toothbrush** (especially behind stones), rinse, dry with a microfibre cloth. Risk-free for gold and hard stones.

## Method 2 — microfibre or polishing cloth

To revive shine without soaking, a **gold polishing cloth** removes the dull film. Perfect for quick, regular upkeep.

## Method 3 — when to see a jeweller

For a piece set with fragile stones (emerald, opal, pearl), an antique item, or stubborn grime, professional cleaning (a controlled ultrasonic bath) is safer.
