Silver reacts with sulphur in the air, skin and some cosmetics: black silver sulphide forms. It's not dirt but surface oxidation, reversible. A chain worn often actually tarnishes less, as friction limits the deposit.

If the chain carries a pendant with a stone, pearl or plating, avoid baking soda: lukewarm water + mild soap, light brushing with a soft brush, rinse, dry. Gentler, with no risk to sensitive elements.
